Types of Antibiotics

The different types of antibiotics are arranged according to their effective range in the antibiotics list.

Tetracyclines are commonly used type of antibiotic and are considered to be effective against the Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. These antibiotics are also effective against psittacosis and rickettsias. Ciprofloxacin is another effective type of antibiotic in the antibiotic list which can be used for mild infection treatment of sinuses and urinary tract. Penicillin, erythromycins and the cephalosporins are medium spectrum antibiotics and are very effective against the Gram positive bacteria. Polymyxins are considered to be narrow spectrum antibiotics because these can be effective against few species of bacteria.

Tetracycline

It belongs to the bacteria of genus Streptomyces. These types of antibiotics in the antibiotic list are very effective against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria which can interfere with protein synthesis. Rickettsial bacterial infections like Rocky mountain spotted, respiratory, urinary infections, intestinal, some eyes, acne and other diseases can be treated with this antibiotic. There can be permanent teeth discoloration with tetracycline and pregnant and lactating should not use it. There is loss of the usefulness of these antibiotics because of strains development of microorganisms resistant.

Bacitracin

Bacitracin is another type of antibiotic which is produced by bacterial strains Bacillus subtilis. Topical therapy like for eye and skin infections can be treated with this antibiotic as it is included in the antibiotic list. This antibiotic is very effective against gram positive bacteria. It should not be used internally as it is toxic to humans.

Erythromycin

Erythromycin is one of several types of antibiotics in the antibiotic list which is produced by the bacteria of genus Streptomyces. It is very effective against the gram positive bacteria like streptococci, pneumococci and staphylococci. It is also effective against gram negative bacteria and some fungi. There is protein synthesis with erythromycin in susceptible microorganisms. Diseases like syphilis infections, pneumonia due to fungi, streptococcus can be treated with this antibiotic.

Streptomycin

This type of antibiotic is produced by the soil bacteria of genus Streptomyces. This antibiotic is effective against gram negative and gram negative bacteria including the species resistant to the antibiotics like penicillin, streptococci and bacteria. This antibiotic is effective against the tubercle bacilli. It is normally used by combining one or more drugs ehtambutol, isoniazid and aminosalicylic acid. This antibiotic is included in the antibiotic list as well.

Cephalosporin

This type of antibiotic is related to more than 20 antibiotics in the antibiotic list derived from genus Cephalosporium of fungi and it chemically related to penicillin as well. This antibiotic can act against gram positive and gram negative bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis. It can be used to treat meningitis, gonorrhea and staphulococcal and other infections which can not be treated with penicillin. There can be increased bacterial resistance to drugs with overuse of cephalosporins.
