Antibiotics and Alcohol

A large portion of the population has been discussed if there were any problems that could be caused by interaction of alcohol and antibiotics. What should be noted is that, no matter the type of medication used, alcohol consumption while on medication can lead to serious deadly consequences. Alcohol and antibiotics reaction varies; as in some cases the side effects of alcohol increased by the antibiotics and in other cases there is not much effect and occasionally it is distorted completely. However the reactions are generally very difficult to predict. Some of the antibiotics from the antibiotics list is strongly advised to not to use alcohol during treatment.

Predictably, the consequences of alcohol consumption while on antibiotic treatment differ for various antibiotics. Alcohol is proven not to reduce the effects of many antibiotics out of the long antibiotic list. However, sometimes, consumption of alcohol while on antibiotic medication can lead to some common side effects of the two combining, such as sleepiness, dizziness as well as some other stomach problems.

Antibiotics, metronidazole (Flagyl), tinidazole (Tindamax) and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim) are the most common antibiotics from the antibiotics list that require alcohol consumption to be avoided as it may lead to severe consequences. Even consuming traces of alcohol with the antibiotics from the antibiotic list that requires alcohol avoidance can cause many side effects to occur and a few examples to these side effects would be flushing, headache, nausea and vomiting as well as increased heart rate. What should be noted is that some other products such as mouthwashes contain minor amounts of alcohol which should be avoided while taking the antibiotics from the antibiotics list that required alcohol avoidance.

Excess and chronic alcohol consumption is known to damage the liver and can also cause a change in the way some drugs, such as antibiotics (doxycycline (Vibramycin, Doryx)) to process in a different way than they should. In these cases the dose of antibiotics are generally increased to get an effective treatment.

As well as this information, antibiotic users should bear in mind that alcohol consumption reduces energy and results in delays in treatment and recovery from diseases. Therefore it is highly recommended to avoid alcohol consumption while on antibiotic treatment.
